Hiring A PI For The First Time: 3 Tips

Business Blog

Hiring a private investigator is not something most people do very often. So, when you are thinking of hiring a PI, it can be hard to figure out what to do. You can ask friends and relatives for advice, but chances are, many of them have never hired a private investigator themselves. That's where this article comes in handy. Here are three tips to help you hire a PI for the first time.

Look for someone who has worked on your type of case before.

Perhaps you're hiring a PI to follow a business partner who you believe may be selling secrets to a competitor. Or maybe you're hiring a PI to follow your partner and see if they're cheating. These are very different scenarios. In fact, every scenario people typically hire a PI for is quite different. For best results, look for a PI who has experience working on the type of case you're working on. For instance, if it's a business issue, hire a PI who has worked on business issues before.

Meet in person.

These days, thanks to the internet, you can hire a PI without ever having to meet them in person. But this isn't ideal. If you can manage to do so, meet the PI in person before you hire them. This gives you a chance to get to know their personality, ask them any questions and see how they respond, and so forth. You'll have to have lots of conversations with a PI throughout the process, so it's important to hire someone who can not only do the work, but can communicate with you well, too.

Ask about insurance.

In some states, PIs are required to carry insurance. In other states, they're not. Regardless of state requirements, though, it is best to hire a PI who carries insurance. Sadly, there are instances in which PIs are injured on the job. You would not want to be held liable for any injuries they incur, which may happen if the PI is not insured. Ask to see documentation of the PI's insurance. Most PIs will readily present this to you as they, too, understand how important insurance is in this industry.

Hiring a PI for the first time can require some attention to detail. Follow the tips above, and you should be on the right path. Don't be afraid to interview a few PIs before choosing one.
