Getting Your Boat Motor Ready For Winter

Business Blog

Owning a boat can be very enjoyable in the spring and summer when the weather is warm, and fishing, boating, and swimming are all part of the summer fun. But, when winter is closing in, there are some things you will need to do to that boat to get it ready for the offseason.

Engine Preparation

One of the most critical parts of getting your boat ready for the winter is having a boat motor engine flush done to remove water and other contaminants from the system. The engine on many boats can get water in the engine that can freeze, and the cooling system needs to be flushed out so that only antifreeze remains inside the cooling system.

Water can get into the engine oil system, so draining the oil and replacing it will help protect the engine block and lower unit of the boat. It is a good idea to have your mechanic go over the entire engine and do the boat motor engine flush for you every fall before the boat goes into storage.

The engine flush can be done any time of year if there is an issue with the engine cooling correctly or if you suspect there is a problem, and there are systems that make it easy to do at home in the driveway if you would prefer to work on your own boat.

Saltwater Cooling Systems

On some boats, especially those with large outboard motors, the cooling solution involves pulling water into the engine and then exhausting it out the back. If you run your boat on the ocean or any saltwater location, flushing the salt out of the system is critical because it can cause corrosion in the water pump and the water passages.

While saltwater is less likely to freeze in the winter, it can still happen, and the salt in the system can do a lot of damage. A boat motor engine flush for these outboard style engines will flush the saltwater out of the cooling system to protect the pump and other parts of the system.

If the boat is going to be stored outside, antifreeze can also be put into the system after the saltwater is removed but will need to be flushed out before the boat goes back in the water in the spring. Storing the boat inside will better protect it, but it is still good to do the engine flush before putting it in storage to ensure that the motor will be ready to go in the spring.
