Things You Must Do To Ensure The Fire Extinguisher Will Be Able To Be Used When Needed

Business Blog

In the event of a small fire, you may be able to control the situation and put out the flames with the use of a fire extinguisher. Of course, if it is not cared for properly, you may not be able to access it or get it to work when you need it the most. Therefore, you will want to take the time to carefully examine the following points.

Check The Pressure Level

It is vital that the pressure within the fire extinguisher is at the proper level. Many of the newer fire extinguishers have a gauge on them that will let you know when the pressure is no longer good enough to rely on it to put out a fire. As long as the arrow in the gauge is within the green area, then your extinguisher still has enough pressure. If it isn't, then you either have to have it serviced by a professional or you need to simply replace it with a new fire extinguisher.

Keep An Eye Out For Visible Damages

Every month, or more often if your fire extinguisher is in a hallway or somewhere where there is a high volume of foot traffic, you will want to visibly inspect the exterior of it. The more people that walk past it, the more likely it is that something such as the nozzle will become damaged, the seal could become broken, or the canister could become dented. Replace all damaged extinguishers. If you find that this is happening often, you will want to find another place to store the extinguisher, while ensuring that it is still within easy reach of everyone.

Inspect The Surroundings Of It

You will need to make sure that you are always keeping the perimeter of the fire extinguisher free of all debris or various hazards that could hide it from plain sight or cause you to be unable to grab it quickly in an emergency. It is also important to make sure that you are letting everyone else know that they need to refrain from putting things near, or on the fire extinguisher. For example, you can't let people lay their coats over top of it.

When you do those few things, you will have a much easier time counting on that fire extinguisher to work for you should there ever be a small fire in your building. Remember, should a fire ever get out of control, you will need to simply vacate the building and get far away from it while waiting for emergency services to arrive.
