Tips For Driving A Rented Box Truck During A Move

Business Blog

It is not uncommon for people to get a box truck rental from a moving truck rental company when they are moving short or long distances. Renting a box truck can make it much easier to move, but it is also important to drive a box truck safely. Most people do not drive large box trucks like the ones offered by moving truck rental companies very often, so extra caution needs to be exercised. If you're renting a box truck to transport your belongings during a move, use the following tips:

Familiarize Yourself with the Truck

Prior to leaving the moving truck rental company, take the time to do a thorough inspection of the truck. Check for any damage and make sure the company has record of it-- the last thing you want is to be charged to repair damage that you did not cause. Make sure that you understand the controls of the truck and check to see that the turn signals, windshield wipers, and brake lights are all working properly. It is also a good idea to check the tire pressure and ensure that the tires are in good condition.

Increase Your Distance Between Other Vehicles

Driving a box truck during a move is a lot different than driving a sedan, SUV, minivan, or even a full-size pick-up truck. Since most box trucks are quite large in size, they can take a much longer time to come to a complete stop. Don't drive a rented box truck in the same manner as you would your normal vehicle. While driving a box truck, it is extremely important to leave ample room between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Turn Safely

A box truck has a much larger turn radius than smaller passenger vehicles. Pay careful attention when making a turn-- since a box truck takes longer to complete a turn, it is imperative to avoid turning in front of approaching vehicles. Your best bet is to wait until you have a green turn signal or until traffic is completely clear. It should also be noted that you need to take turns at as low of a speed as possible.

Know the Weight Limit

Before you place any of your belongings on a box truck that you rented for your move, make sure you ask about the weight limit of the truck. If you overload the truck, it will not operate properly, and there is a chance that the internal components under the hood can be damaged or become overheated from the stress of a load that is too large.
